How to Do a Layered Haircut: 12 Steps with Pictures

how to layer your own hair

I had the pretty, low side thingy going on that I love on other people! This style offers a carefree and effortless look, perfect for everyday wear or casual outings. It is ideal for layered hair as the loose and messy nature of the braid accommodates the different lengths, creating a relaxed and textured appearance.

A Beginner’s Guide to Cutting Your Own Hair at Home

But if you’re already about to scroll past my warnings and disclaimers and just do the dang thing yourself, then fine, I get it, and I’ve been there. After you've done the damn thing (congrats!), it's all about making sure both sides match up. For this, simply combine the sections of hair that you separated before cutting, and then comb it all downwards in front of your face to see if it's even. If some pieces are longer than others, pull the scissors back out and do a little point cutting until everything's the same length, but be careful not to take off too much in the process. Now, when you're ready, take the front triangle section of hair you created and divide it down the middle, as these will be the pieces used to create your layers.

Basically, you get a simple, convenient way to further control how much hair you cut, aside from clipper combs. You can layer your hair mid-cut with a quick flick of the lever. You’re in full control of your looks, you learn a cool new skill and you save quite a bit of money in the process.

If you really want to make a statement, go with the jellyfish haircut. "It's essentially a version of a mullet that plays on shapes and contrasting lines," Gregory Patterson, celebrity hairstylist and color and styling expert for Sally Beauty, previously told POPSUGAR. It features one sharp layer right at the chin, creating a stark contrast between the two lengths.

Buying Guides

Use plenty of pins and finish with firm hold hairspray to keep the longer layers and lengths in place. For layered wavy hairstyles, keep it simple with the best hair straighteners. "It's all about working with your natural texture," says King. "Blast hair dry and use some straighteners to make a bend in the hair or a soft wave." Before you start trimming your hair at home, find a tutorial that most closely matches your own hair length and hair type, so you can get the most accurate guide. And to make sure you’re getting expert information, Brown says to choose one created by an actual hair expert or stylist.

"Blow-dry the hair with a round brush and simply fix the layers as you see fit," says Fitzsimons. Alternatively, you can rough-dry your hair if that's what you normally do. Either way, styling your hair afterward will reveal if any further work needs to be done. As far as length is concerned, Brooklyn-based hairstylist Teddi Cranford says it can be helpful to use your own face as a guide.

To style it, let layers take center stage by rough drying then finishing with a slim vented brush to create volume. Then lightly mist with salt spray to encourage your natural texture, flicks, and bends to emerge. "The layers are cut around your face at different levels of lengths that accentuate your features to give a pop," Raven Hurtado, hairstylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, previously told POPSUGAR. It's traditionally a long layered haircut but can also be customized into a medium layered haircut with bangs if that's more your style. Even if you're not ready to do anything drastic like a big chop or add some type of bangs to your style, mixing in some layers all over to your original cut is a nice alternative. From layered haircuts for long hair to layered haircuts for curly hair, the viral "octopus" haircut, and the up-and-coming "kitty cut," you can't go wrong with these options.

Tips

You definitely need to know what kind of clippers you should get, as well as the order of cutting. Start with the top, then the sides, then the back and finally, clean up your neckline and sideburns. Not necessarily after every cut, but make sure you clean the blades from time to time. As I cut pretty close and there’s contact with my skin, I disinfect my blades at least twice per month. Hair and debris will deteriorate your clipper blade’s sharpness and will reduce the quality of your cuts.

Breakages and split hairs; dreary looking locks – if you’re too harsh on your hair, these can significantly shorten the life of your haircut. A very simple, yet effective tip regardless of your preferred hair length is to leave the sides a bit shorter than the top. To control the cutting length, you have to swap one blade with a different sized one. This can feel a bit overwhelming for beginners, not to mention the whole ordeal costs more.

She advises sectioning your hair in a triangle as seen in this video of hers. When parting hair like this, Marjan likes to use the arches of her eyebrows as a guide to determine the outermost edges of the section. Then, you might want to take a deep breath and relax your hands.

In the morning, carefully unravel the braids and use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently separate the strands and add volume. Finally, refresh your braids with a lightweight leave-in conditioner or hair oil to hydrate and nourish your hair. As you braid your hair, use hair-colored bobby pins along the way to secure the layers in place.

Its smart look has proven it a popular piece in luxury commercial realms, such as waiting areas and offices, but the addition of a cushion also renders it an appropriate choice for stylish living areas. If lighting is the jewelry of a room, a statement chair is the designer handbag. Well designed and expertly crafted, chairs add polish to any room—just like a Chanel 2.55 would an outfit. Made of supple leather, chromium steel, or luxe velvet, these 19 iconic chairs have curves in all the right places and illustrate that when form meets function, beautiful things happen.

A sitter that easily adapts to lobbies, lounges, and homes across the world, the Swan chair is still in production today at Fritz Hansen. Inspired by a painting of Danish merchants in Ming dynasty chairs in 1944, the Wishbone chair was drawn up exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949. Its elegant simplicity makes it a masterpiece of Scandinavian design and a mainstay in dining rooms and offices alike. Used as a deck chair at Eileen Gray’s famous villa E-1027 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, the Transat chair has become one of the architect’s most enduring pieces. It gets its name from “transatlantic,” referring to deck chairs commonly used on steamships. This style would be a recurring theme in Gray’s buildings, which often resembled houseboats ready to sail.

Also called the Diamond chair, this 1952 chair by Harry Bertoia is an open form and metal style chair which is inspired by sculptures. There can be a seat made out of a different material, or just the continuation of the grid wire. It’s ergonomic for sure, but if you’re looking for premium comfort, include a cushion. It has also been adapted into a more practical side chair without the side wings. They are one of many types of dining chairs and often look throne-like and have upholstered round or shield-shaped backs.

This approach may seem similar to that of Gerrit Rietveld, whose chair and architecture are also included on this list. Both architects were inspired by De Stijl ideology that attempted to break design down to its basic components. Breuer’s Met Museum, later renamed in his honor, also features the De Stijl characteristics that were commonly found in architecture of the time.

Their built projects and written work—such as Learning from Las Vegas—helped create a postmodern shift in the fields of art and architecture. Postmodern influences can be seen in two examples of their famous and profoundly unique work, the Queen Anne Side Chair and the Children’s Museum of Houston. Their logical design process is evident in the iconic Eames Chair design that features minimal leg structure cross-braced structure with a simple shell as a seat. The Eames Foundation, originally designed as their home, features a similar careful logic that results in a minimal but beautiful work. Gerrit Rietveld, the designer behind the Red-Blue Chair, was friends with the iconic artist Piet Mondrain…and it shows.

This set of two lounge chairs is made of rust-resistant aluminum with a weather-resistant powder-coated finish. Not only does the metal look sleek, but it's meant to last outside among the elements. This set of two reclining chairs is made from rattan designed to be weather-resistant — although the manufacturer does note that you'll want to cover up these chairs with the included polyester covers in extreme weather. The frame is made from rust-resistant steel and the cushions are filled with 2.3-inch sponge for extra comfort. There are six positions to lounge in and even a side shelf to rest a book or magazine. Some online customer reviews note that the shelf isn't perfectly level and can't be folded down.

That’s why, sometimes, it’s good to be able to take a load off with a good standing desk chair. The debut of this remarkable collection at Milan Design Week captivated attendees, transporting them into a world where toys seamlessly merge with art. Displayed against the backdrop of Condé Nast’s Vogue Closet exhibition, the chairs became more than just functional pieces—they became cultural artifacts, inviting viewers to reconsider the boundaries between fantasy and reality. With remote working still the norm for many, Norwegian designer Daniel Rybakken has devised a dining table that can be easily adjusted to instead function as a seated or standing desk. As an Woodworking Artist I seek to elevate wood art beyond its limitations of mere linear form and sculpting.

Pierre Jeanneret’s Office Chair

Defined by its round seat and bentwood back, the Era chair (sometimes called a Thonet chair) is both lightweight and durable, making it ideal for commercial settings. When tasked with furnishing the German pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, German-American architect Mies van der Rohe conceived a chair fit for royalty—but in keeping with his modernist aesthetic. The leather-and-chrome seat (and accompanying ottoman) have been produced by Knoll ever since. Homeowners likely will recognize rocking chairs, which are chairs mounted on curved bands that allow the chair to rock forward and back. These chairs are perfect for people who have a hard time sitting still and feel more relaxed in motion. Parents also love using rocking chairs to soothe babies and young children to sleep. Like much of her other work, the Z-chair abstracts a simple gesture that captures the basic function needed and develops a unique and elegant form without sacrificing its utility. This may be most similar to the Heydar Aliyev Center which has become an iconic example of Hadid’s revolutionary parametric architecture.

When the Ming dynasty ruled China from 1368 to 1644, the country created well-appointed pieces now known as Ming Dynasty furniture. Known for its simple lines and subtle curves, this historic chair style can transcend time and trends. The Wassily Chair was much more simplistic and structurally exposed compared to other chairs in the 1920s. The expansive foam upholstered shell, which has two inset cushions for added comfort, is supported by a bent tubular steel frame.

Celebrating creativity and promoting a positive culture by spotlighting the best sides of humanity—from the lighthearted and fun to the thought-provoking and enlightening. Its fitted arms and back maintain a cohesion in the design and a tapered block foot – an original design feature – has gone largely unchanged, indicative of the design’s purity.

Though this chair may not at first glance seem to relate to the geometric simplicity of Louis Kahn’s famous architecture, Kahn used spindle chairs extensively throughout his work. This makes sense when considering that his architecture featured the use of minimal geometry used in dramatic ways, such as the simplicity of the Salk Institute. These designs were informed by a purity and utility that defined Louis Kahn’s architecture. It's defined as a “total art” or “a work of art that makes use of all or many art forms.” You might be wondering, does such art exist? Some of the most iconic pieces of architecture involve the creation of a total work of art considered on all scales. The happy result of this intention is a series of incredible furniture pieces that embody the intention of the larger building.

Its uncomplicated shape means that it easily adapts to both serious and relaxed environments. A good example of this revolutionary design is the 1930 Brno armchair (pictured) by Mies van der Rohe – internationally acclaimed designer of Chicago’s IBM building fame. Modern examples are almost always unholstered which adds comfort and sometimes only the back legs may be saber as in this example. Piped detailing, cording or nailhead trim may be used to finish off the design.

Inspired by Louis XVI armchair, the cousin to the aforementioned Louis XIV style, designer Philippe Starck reimagined this fancy silhouette in a single-piece injection-molded transparent polycarbonate. Turns out, Ming Dynasty furniture is so influential that actually inspired another iconic chair design. When creating the iconic Wishbone Chair in 1944, Hans Wegner was inspired by a painting of Danish merchants in Ming Chairs. Since then, it's become a mainstay in stylish dining rooms and offices alike. The Wishbone Chair might look simple, but it actually requires over 100 manufacturing steps. Considered an icon of the 1950s Italian design, the armchair-sofa Lady stands out for its extremely modern structure.

The first chairs introduced in the 1950s still exist today and continue to be one of the most collectible models of sexy (not to mention comfortable) midcentury design. Next on our list of classic mid-century modern chair designs is the tulip chair. This chair was included in the Pedestal Collection of Eero Saarinen because of the single leg underneath the base of the seat. Tulip chairs typically swivel with an aluminum base and molded fiberglass shell. The tulip chair is most often white with an accent color for the seat cushion.

Whether you're catching up poolside with your best friend or snuggling close with your significant other, a two-person lounge chair can make your patio area more inviting. We especially like this one because you can adjust each side separately and choose from five reclining positions. The textured polyester cushion is machine washable and designed to be weather-resistant.

3 Ways to Cut Hair in Layers

how to layer your own hair

This is a moment to go back in and slide cut or point cut any uneven pieces. Use slide cutting to adjust your length and point cutting to adjust your overall shape. For this particular cut, I suggest a method called slide cutting.

How to cut your own bangs:

If you need a major cut or want a completely new style, it is best to save that for the professionals. The shape and length of your hair change when it’s wet so it’s usually best to cut it while it’s dry. But if you’re going for a style that has precise lines and edges, it can be easier to cut it when it’s wet. With just a few tools and some easy steps, you can create that layered look in medium hair on your own, even if it’s your first time trying. "Use the comb as a guide for a straight line, then cut upwards with the scissors." But whatever you do, be patient and keep your cuts minimal.

Cutting All-Over Shaggy Layers

We can gradually separate our layers by point-cutting directly into a single spot. First, use the fine tooth end of your cutting comb to bring forward a small quarter-inch section of hair from each side of your natural parting. Carefully bring that down to your starting point, pull it out slightly so you can view what you're doing more accurately, and gently glide your shears down the hair. You will not be closing or dragging your shears but sliding, cutting your way down the hair.

Slide Cutting

Trim and make small adjustments until you end up with medium hair layers that are satisfying and symmetrical. You can also curl your medium-layered hair for more styling options. If you have straight hair, you can also cut it while it’s 80% air-dried or slightly damp to create sharp and precise lines.

Once you're prepped and ready with your tools laid out in front of you, part your hair where it normally falls. Then, it's time to section the hair, which is super important as it ultimately determines how much you cut. Luckily, we managed to gather some tips and tricks from experts who understand how tempting it can be to cut your own hair right now. Kenna suggests using a pair of steel scissors, which are more precise, although even kitchen or fabric scissors will do the trick.

How to Cut Hair in Layers

Blending your front layers into your overall length is important to avoid disconnection between your longest front layer and the ends of your overall hair length. While stylists will warn you not to attempt some hair-shaping moves at home, face-framing layers can be achieved without leaving your bathroom. Herewith, professional hairstylist Ashley Rubell shares an illustrated, 10-step guide that will teach you how to cut face-framing layers at home. Plus, celebrity hairstylist Graham Nation adds tips for curly girls.

Things You’ll Need

Insert them before you finish the last few strands of your braid. This technique ensures that stray hairs are kept in check and helps maintain the structure of your braids, especially if you have layers. Opt for a heavy block fringe to add contrast to long feathery layers, and combine with simple highlights for extra dimension. This look is elevated by its shiny finish, so ensure hair is hydrated with serums and hair masks before blow drying then finish the look and maximize your layers by using a curling iron on the ends of your hair.

Pay attention to the direction of your hair and your scissors.

You can always take more hair off, but you can't add back what you've already chopped! If you're cutting your hair while it's wet, remember it will look even shorter once it dries, so snip with extreme caution. In fact, if your strands are curly or you're wavy-haired, only cut your hair when it's dry so you can get a better idea of what the final look will be. If you have straight hair, you can cut while it's wet or dampen it with a spray bottle first to get the cleanest, sharpest lines possible. Once you have decided which braid you want to try, you need to prep your hair next. Wash the hair with the right products that suit your hair texture.

The layered 'wolf cut' style

how to layer your own hair

When it comes to cutting your own hair, even a simple trim can turn out disastrous if you have no idea what you're doing. That's why, under normal circumstances, we'd never recommend attempting to cut your own face-framing layers at home, as it only increases the chance for things to go awry. Now is the exception, though, seeing as we're living in uncharted territory due to the on-going pandemic, and many folks are still steering clear of salons and choosing to play hairstylist at home.

This gives you more control and a better idea of what the final result will look like. Layers give that extra touch of style and flexibility to medium hair. You can wear them straight today and curly tomorrow, always looking your best.

Starting just below the chin will always be your safest bet if you have extra long hair. No matter your hair length or face shape, you never want to start your face-framing layers above the cheekbones or nose level. Face framing layers open things up and highlight one's facial features. With most of your hair clipped back, take a moment to notice your face shape and the features you want to highlight. My face shape is square, and for best results, I typically like front layers to accentuate my cheekbones.

Achieve this look by blowdrying your hair before using a straightener to create waves. We recommend using a heat protectant beforehand to keep your hair in good condition. Alternatively, if dealing with naturally wavy hair, create this look using a wave spray and manipulate the hair to achieve desired waves.

It can also represent the concept of the game of life, where every decision is a roll of the dice, and every outcome is a card dealt. One possible meaning of flaming dice tattoos is taking risks and living life to the fullest. The flames symbolize passion and intensity; you can interpret it as a reminder to embrace adventure and seize the day. The fire in the dice can also represent the individual’s personality, wild, untamed, and not afraid of taking risks.

454 Tattoo and Body Piercing serves the Encinitas community with body art. Artist galleries can be viewed online for people to choose which tattooer they would like to work with. 454 Tattoo follows strict standards of cleanliness and sterilization procedures to avoid cross-cotemination, and artists use new and pre-sterilized needles for each client. Jewelry and piercing services are also available, and clients must be 18 years of age or older to receive tattoos.

You can get it in a traditional or old-school style or a modern or stylized approach in colour or black. The design can be simple, minimalist, or very detailed and complex. The placement will depend on the design, the size of the tattoo, and the individual’s preference.

Humanity has been gambling for millennia, and the development of dice came about following the introduction of several gambling games. To correctly trace the history of dice use, one must go back at least 2000–2500 years. As a result, dice games are the subject of numerous tales and phenomena. You can come up with your own personal design based on your preference and personal thought process. Pick the elements that mean good fortune for you and also include elements that look good with the dice to create your design. The color scheme for the dice can also be unusual instead of the same conventional color combinations.
